An annual physical examination and immunization program are the most effective steps in preventative medicine. Detecting health problems early is one of the best ways to ensure effective treatment and a quick, complete recovery. One should regularly check for unusual symptoms like strange odors, lumps, loss of appetite, vomiting, rashes, persistent diarrhea, increased water consumption or urination, and a marked weight change.
Dogs should be vaccinated against rabies, distemper, parvovirus, coronavirus, bordatella, hepatitis, parainfluenza, leptospirosis and lyme disease. Cats should be immunized for distemper, rabies, feline leukemia virus, rhinotracheitis and calicivirus.
Dogs and cats should both be on heartworm preventative year round and be tested for internal parasites annually. In addition, we recommend that you consider using one of the many new flea/tick control products.
